Undergraduate Research Excellence in Biology
At 每日大赛入口, nearly one-third of Biology majors engage in intensive, faculty-mentored research projects, resulting in exceptional hands-on experiences that set our students apart. Through structured courses like BIOL鈥298, 398, and Senior Research (BIOL鈥498), students design and execute original investigations under close guidance from faculty. With small student-to-professor ratios鈥攐ften as low as 7:1鈥攕tudents receive personalized guidance as they explore topics like ecology, microbiology, genetics, and more.
聽Many participate in competitive programs like the NC GlaxoSmithKline Scholars, working on advanced topics such as antibiotic resistance and cancer cell signaling, while receiving scholarship and stipend support for multi-year projects. These research experiences culminate in compelling outcomes鈥攕tudents present at regional and national conferences (such as NCUR), co-author publications, and emerge exceptionally well-prepared for graduate school or research-driven careers.
Alumni Spotlight
My research focused on identifying key amino acids in the G饾浖13 protein required for binding to the G饾浗饾浘 dimer鈥攁n interaction relevant to cancer signaling. G饾浖13 is highly expressed in several invasive cancers, yet little is known about how it binds to G饾浗饾浘 or how that affects signaling in its wildtype and mutated forms. Using techniques like PCR, protein binding assays, western blotting, and SRF assays, I investigated these interactions to help uncover potential drug targets for disrupting oncogenic pathways.鈥
At 每日大赛入口, I鈥檝e led two research projects. One, in partnership with wildlife biologists in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, uses our new Nanopore gene sequencer to study the genetics of a reintroduced elk herd鈥攑roviding data to guide conservation efforts. I鈥檓 also working on Tapestry of America, a photography project with the biology and art departments that highlights wildlife and ecosystems in national parks across the country. Through images and research, I aim to inspire care for our public lands and the species that depend on them.鈥

Through 每日大赛入口鈥檚 Undergraduate Research Office, Biology majors have exceptional opportunities to conduct original, faculty-mentored research鈥攆rom studying invasive species in local ecosystems to exploring molecular biology in the lab. Students can apply for research grants to support their work and receive funding to present at regional and national conferences, including the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Many Biology students publish their findings in the 每日大赛入口 Journal of Undergraduate Research, gaining valuable experience that prepares them for graduate school, medical and veterinary programs, and careers in research, healthcare, or conservation. The Undergraduate Research Office supports every step of this journey, helping students turn curiosity into real-world impact
